Participate in The Green Toronto Awards projects, and you could win $5,000, which can be donated to the charity of your choice. The City of Toronto has created this award to recognize people, projects, and other initiatives that focus on being environmentally and ecologically aware and proactive.

There are 10 Green Toronto Award categories and here is a summary of each:

1. The Green Design Award rewards the efforts of a company, project or group working with infrastructure, architecture or industrial design. Imagine a company or a project that is made entirely out of recycled products that is designed to house the citizens of Toronto.

2. The Green Roof Award recognizes an individual, company or project contributing to a healthy and beautiful city through the environmental, economic and social benefits of green roofs.

This could go to a company that decides to convert an old gray space apartment architecturally into a green space apartment with vibrant living green roofs. There would certainly be a lot less smog days have a detrimental effect on Torontonians

3. The Community Project Award section of the Green Toronto Award acknowledges the work of volunteers engaged in community building and conservation.

4. The Environmental Awareness Award is for an individual, group or company who has helped people understand the fragile balance between the earth and human production as they interact in the City of Toronto.

You can do this by creating books, videos, movies, web sites and other educational enterprises. Imagine promoting your project on Youtube � so the world can benefit.

5. The Energy Conservation Award rewards winning, quantifiable improvements in operation or manufacture processes that decrease consumption. Projects like companies utilizing fluorescent lighting and turning the lights out after hours qualify.

This action also helps thousands of birds survive that were flying into well lit buildings.

6. The Health Award rewards an individual, group or company involved in making Toronto a healthier place to live. If you are someone that is addicted to working out, promoting physical fitness and promoting healthy products, then this is a great category.

7. The Leadership Award rewards an individual or company's effort that goes above and beyond the norm. The winner will have a track record of excellence in their contribution to the state of the city's environment.

If you know someone that has been quietly protecting and championing the environment for years, then nominate that person.

8. The Market Transformation Award distinguishes the efforts of a producer, merchant, NGO, promotion company, or an individual promoter or designer to utilize market forces effectively, to endorse products, services and choices, which diminish the impact on the environment and human wellbeing.

9. The Water Efficiency Award part of the Green Toronto Award celebrates efforts to sustainably manage and reduce water use and endorse water preservation.

10. The Youth Award emphasizes the hard work of young people (18 years of age and under on December 31, 2007) who demonstrate leadership in greening projects. Here is your chance to get out in the community and make difference.

Remember you can make difference by bringing awareness to others with a video cam and letting your peers hear and see your efforts.

11. Bob Hunter Environmental Achievement AwardIt is designed to recognize City of Toronto organizations that have pooled their hub business with valuable strategies and advance imaginative solutions to preserve and enhance the metropolitan environment.
