Eco Friendly Homes

Eco Friendly homes feature environmentally sustainable products and features. Eco homes are friendly to the occupants and the environment.

The environment benefits from energy conservation, in the form of less green house gas production. As your eco Realtor here are some things you can do to create or enhance your new or current home to sustainable living standards.

Eco Friendly exteriors

Solar paneled roofs

Solar roofs can be retrofit to your present home, and on those sunny days can harness the sun’s energy to provide electricity for your home. Solar roofs use Photovoltaic (PV) cells that converts sunlight into electricity, and it does so by using silicon.

Each PV cell is made of a semiconductor. Semiconductors are made of a number of compounds, but the most familiar is silicon. At present, while the sun’s energy is free the cost of installation of one of these systems is not, but because of the awareness of high and ever higher energy costs more research is going into bringing down the price of solar roofs.

Green roofs

Green roofs are slowly appearing on the landscape of urban centres, and some of the known benefits of these roofs include the beautification of concrete buildings, reduction of air conditioning use in small buildings, retention and reduction of storm water runoff, reduction of smog, decrease of noise pollution and creation of ecological habitats for insects and wild birds.

Concrete homes

You may be surprised to learn that concrete constructed homes that is homes made of concrete walls, instead of the current insulated homes of wood and steel frames, are more energy efficient, using less energy to heat and cool a home. Concrete homes are designed in a number of ways including insulated concrete forms. To find out more about using this eco friendly home design click here

Energy efficient products

You can be green conscious by looking around the exterior of the home for any potential leaks maybe around doors and windows. Energy efficient products such as energy efficient windows and energy efficient doors add another dimension to sustainable living at home, and energy star products are a good choice when it is time to replace old products.

Did you know that human activities like burning fossil fuels (oil, natural gas, and coal), and wood produces C02, which contributes to green house gas production? When your home is properly insulated, you use less energy heating and cooling the home, thus produce less green house gases emissions.
