How To Achieve Eco Friendly Living
in Toronto

Eco friendly living is at the top of many Toronto homeowners' agenda. We all want to be environmentally responsible, while still maintaining an adequate comfort level.

The good news is that going green is achievable without too much effort, and it even pays well. The City of Toronto has introduced rebates that encourage its citizens to live green. See the website, Live Green Toronto.

As homeowners begin to change their habits many are paying attention to construction, décor and the way they manage energy resources that helps them to achieve sustainable living. Here are some issues to think about...

House Design

A recent survey suggested that home buyers now expect builders to take environmental concerns into account when constructing homes. Many house builders have responded, and the number of green homes available in Toronto has increased.

For some time, the US has had a eco friendly building program called Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LLED). That programme is now coming to Canada.

Other builders are creating energy efficient homes that meet the requirements for the Energy Star rating for new homes.

Builders are designing homes which have improved insulation, more efficient boilers to heat both water and rooms, more protection against drafts, and energy efficient windows.

Good use of overhangs can improve shade in summer, while letting winter sun in. And even in Toronto, using solar energy is a viable option for some of the home's energy needs. Used in conjunction with a photovoltaic cell, solar energy panels can cut electricity consumption.

The use of natural, local materials and energy efficient sanitary ware also help to promote eco friendly

Eco Friendly Living In The Home

Once you have moved into a home, there are other things you can do as well, to make your home more eco friendly. For example, you can use energy saving light bulbs. These are available in all shapes and sizes and can be used with a variety of light fittings and switches. They are more expensive than ordinary bulbs, but should cut your electricity bill and last for up to ten years.
