You may remember when the City of Toronto recommended that all of its citizens use energy efficient light bulbs (LEDs) for their Christmas decorations, but it was later discovered by a journalist or two that the city was still using incandescent, energy draining light bulbs, to light up City hall during the festive Christmas season.
On that news most of its citizens could be seen rolling their eyes, but the City has mended its ways.
And on the subject of efficient light bulbs here are a few tips for sustainable green living that will be a great gift to the City of Toronto and the environment.
1. Use focused light or task lighting. For example turn on the table lamp when working or watching the T.V, and turn off all other lighting at home or work.Thousands of birds would still be alive if lights went off in our tall office buildings at night.
2. Replace incandescent lamps, (regular light bulbs) with compact fluorescent lights
(CFL)
, which are more expensive, but last much longer.3. Not all CFLs are alike, and to get even more benefit from them

In addition CFLs contain a small amount of mercury, and should be disposed of in the same environmentally responsible manner as one would dispose of empty paint cans at your local household hazardous waste site.
4. If you continue to use incandescent lights, use a light dimmer, which is a great way to reduce the energy.
